In the Pre-Primary and Primary school, classes are bilingual in French and English. French is the main language, English represents 30% of the instruction, i.e. 5 hours of English per week, in line with the Cambridge Primary programme.
In Middle and High School, classes are taught in French with 3 hours of English (Cambridge ESOL programme) and the possibility of choosing additional foreign languages (German and Spanish).
Children may also choose to take part in Extra-mural Activities, which are in English or French, depending on the activity and the instructor.
The language of communication between learners and school staff is French or English. Learners generally speak French or English amongst themselves.
What if I speak only one language?
Your support, motivation and encouragement are essential to guide your child in embarking on a bilingual education. However, it is not necessary that parents speak or understand both languages taught to your child.
The school provides homework support to children.
What if my child does not speak French?
At Cape Town French school, our immersive bilingual curriculum, (FLSco and French Passerelle) is designed to gradually integrate international students aged 3-16 years old to the French curriculum. We are providing them with support and encouragement to become creative, confident bilingual communicators.
Are all students enrolled at the Cape Town French School French?
The Cape Town French School educates students representing 45 different nationalities. Approximately 52% of students are French (including 18% with dual nationality), 20% South African and 28% have other nationalities.
Is it compulsory for my child to eat lunch at the canteen?
Canteen attendance is not compulsory.
The canteen provides, at a reasonable price, hot meals that consist of three well-balanced courses. Each week’s menu is displayed at the School.
Children can also bring their own lunch box and sit in the canteen, at a table with their classmates. Please note, however, that meals brought from home can not be warmed up in the canteen (except for the TPS and PS children, i.e. 2 and 3 years old, who eat in their classrooms).
Does the school follow a European or South African school calendar?
The school year starts at the beginning of September and ends at the beginning of July, in line with the French school calendar. It consists of 36 weeks of school. The school schedule is available online.
Does the school admits learners in the course of the school year?
If learners arrive from another contracted French school, they are directly admitted within the number of places available. Any other situation will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
What are the school hours?
Pre-Primary and Primary School: 8.30 am to 3.15pm
Middle and High School: 8am to 3 pm or 5 pm
Aftercare is available for Pre-Primary and Primary School learners from 7.15am until 8.20am and from 3.15pm to 5.30 pm Mondays to Thursdays and from 12.30pm to 3.45pm on Fridays.
The Secretariat is open from 8.15 to 1pm and from 1.30pm until 5 pm Monday to Thursday
And from 8.15 to 1 pm and 1.30pm until 3.45 pm on Fridays.
If we move to another country, to which schools will my child be admitted ?
All 492 French schools part of the Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE) as well as any school in France admit learners from the Cape Town French School without an admission test. Learners will continue their schooling at their grade level.
What foreign languages are taught at the Cape Town French School?
In addition to French, the Cape Town French School teaches English, German and Spanish.
Does the school provide assistance to children with difficulties?
In the PrePrimary and Primary School teachers organize small group sessions in the classroom to assist learners who may bve struggling.
Do parents have to purchase school text books?
In the Pre-Primary and Primary School all exercise books and textbooks are provided by the school.
In the Middle and High School textbooks have to be purchased by the families (new or second hand) for the school year.
Is there a school uniform?
Cape Town French School learners do not wear a uniform, however proper attire is required in the school grounds. It is prohibited to wear flip-flops or other shoes that may easily come off while playing. Learners are required to remove cap, hat or any headgear before entering the classroom and during all hours listed on the schedule. The learners clothing must be marked with their name. When participation in outings or external events, wearing the school T-shirt, jersey and/or is strongly encouraged.
Does the school organize field trips?
Teachers organize field trips to tie in with their classes and educational projects, as well as to give learners the opportunity to discover sites in Cape Town or other regions of South Africa. Outings to the theatre, museums or exhibitions are regularly organized.
