Cycle II: CP, CE1 and CE2 (Grades 1 to 3)

In Cycle II, children consolidate their knowledge by learning to read and write, discovering the world and becoming familiar with mathematics. They will also have their first projects in science and history to awaken them to the world around them.

Cycle II is structured around six key areas:

  1. French language proficiency: dialogue, learning to read and write
  2. Mathematics: discovery of numbers, calculations, basic geometry, measurements and dimensions
  3. Foreign Languages-Cambridge International Primary Programme + EMILE
  4. Physical and Sports Education
  5. Artistic education: drawing, singing, visual arts, handicrafts
  6. Questioning the world/ Moral and Civic Education

The core programme is complemented by two hours of English lessons from the Cambridge International Primary Years Programme, in addition to ‘EMILE’ or CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) lessons. Students who join the Lycée Français du Cap during the year will be placed in groups according to their level of English: beginner, intermediate, advanced.

In cycles II and III, only children who already speak French can join the Lycée Français du Cap. Children arriving from another French school, from France or from the AEFE network, are not tested upon arrival at the Lycée Français du Cap. However, students arriving from another school system must take entrance tests so that they can be assigned to the class that best corresponds to their level of French.

The official curriculum of the French Ministry of Education for Cycle II can be found here. (in french)

Cycle III : CM1, CM2, 6ème

Cycle III students will continue to acquire proficiency in the French language as well as the principles of mathematics. Their knowledge is extended to digital tools (Computer Science B2i Level 1, validating their computer and Internet skills), literature, geography, art, technology and sports. During this cycle, the children gain autonomy and confidence.

The key areas are:

  2. Civic education: participating in school life, opening up to the world
  3. Literature: children’s literature, reading, writing
  4. Thoughtful observation of the French language: grammar, conjugation, spelling, vocabulary
  5. Foreign language: listening, speaking, reading, understanding and deepening the knowledge acquired so far
  6. History: from prehistory to the present: the great eras and important facts
  7. Geography: views on the World, Europe, France and an introduction to France’s position in globalization
  8. Mathematics: mental arithmetic, fractions, space and geometry, angles, dimensions and measurements
  9. Experimental sciences and technology: matter, the living world, the environment, hygiene and health, energy, earth and sky, the man-made world, information technology
  10. Visual arts: drawing
  11. Music education: singing, music
  12. Physical and Sports Education

In CM2 (Grade 5), elementary school students become familiar with and prepare for their future years at the Collège, which will begin the following year. They will change campuses and have a different teacher for each subject taught.

Each cycle, lasting three years, allows each student to progress at his or her own pace and thus achieve mastery of the fundamentals. Continuity of learning with previous programmes is ensured. The official programme of the French Ministry of Education for Cycle III can be found here. (in French)
